At Amberley Hall Care Home, we understand that the little things often have the biggest impact. By committing to just 10 minutes each day, our team members are making a significant difference in the lives of our residents.
Remembories is a programme introduced at Amberley Hall in Kings Lynn to help all our residents, but especially those living with dementia. One of the initiatives recently introduced as part of the programme is the concept of “10-Minute Moments.”
Project Support Manager Carolann Hinson explained, “Each morning, every team member – from carers and nurses to reception staff, gardeners and the catering team – is encouraged to spend 10 minutes with a resident, dedicating just a small portion of their day to foster meaningful interactions.
“This could take the form of a chat and a cuppa, a walk in the garden, taking part in an activity together or giving a mini-massage or other pamper treatment – it’s all down to the individual resident and the team member.
“We believe in the power of connection and the profound impact that simple acts of kindness can have on our residents – just 10 minutes is enough to make a real difference.”
Here’s why these brief yet impactful moments are so vital to both our residents and staff.
Social interaction – Some of our residents do not have regular visitors, which can lead to feelings of loneliness and isolation. A dedicated 10-minute interaction provides social engagement, enhancing their mood and overall sense of well-being. This daily dose of companionship can make a world of difference in their lives.
Emotional support – Building relationships with our residents through these brief encounters offers them emotional support. Listening to their stories, sharing experiences, and simply being present can help them feel valued and cared for.
Mental stimulation – Engaging in conversation, sharing a cup of tea, and reminiscing about the past can provide significant mental stimulation for our residents. These activities keep their minds active, which is crucial for maintaining cognitive function and mental acuity.
Improved mood – Interaction with others is a powerful mood booster. Spending time with a resident can alleviate feelings of depression and anxiety, replacing them with joy and a sense of connection. A friendly visit can turn an ordinary day into an extraordinary one.
Sense of purpose – When residents feel that someone is taking the time to be with them, it instills a sense of purpose and importance. These moments show them that they are valued members of our community, contributing positively to their self-esteem and overall happiness.
Physical health – Social interaction is not only good for mental health but also for physical well-being. Studies have shown that social engagement can lead to better physical health outcomes, such as lower blood pressure and a reduced risk of certain health conditions
Ultimately, the goal of the 10-Minute Moments initiative is to enhance the quality of life for all our residents and initial feedback shows they are enjoying the new meetings – which are often with members of our team they perhaps do not know well or have the opportunity to chat with on a regular basis.
