Residents at Avocet Court are no strangers to the soothing sounds of nature. Nestled within beautifully kept grounds and a much-loved woodland area, the community is home to birdsong, rustling hedgerows and the gentle presence of visiting wildlife. But for one member of the team, a recent night brought an experience that felt truly extraordinary.
A Passion for Nature at the Heart of Avocet Court
Jill Calver, one of Avocet Court’s dedicated housekeepers, has long been known for her passion for all things nature. Beyond her daily role, Jill lovingly manages the Avocet Court woodland area, a peaceful sanctuary that brings comfort and joy to residents throughout the year.
The Avocet wildlife area is a haven. From the delicate flutter of garden birds to the quiet movement of muntjac and roe deer, the space is alive with nature. Foxes, squirrels and hedgehogs are regular visitors, while the bee garden and carefully tended bug hotels encourage pollinators and insects to thrive.
“It’s so peaceful,” Jill often says. “We’re so lucky to get so many species of birds. It brings so much pleasure to the residents to be able to spend time with nature.”
Her dedication doesn’t stop there. After conversations with residents, families, and the wider community, Jill recognised a desire for something more structured, a way to nurture and protect the wildlife around them for the future.
Growing a Wildlife Legacy
From that idea, the monthly Wildlife and Conservation Club was born.
Each session is thoughtfully planned to both educate and inspire. The first meeting focused on identifying the different bird species found around Avocet Court. Residents worked together to build bird boxes, carefully discussing the best places around the grounds to install them.
The second session turned attention to planting and landscaping. Residents shared their ideas for seating areas and planting schemes, choosing seeds and bulbs that would not only brighten the grounds but also attract and support local wildlife.
The club has quickly become a highlight of the month, a chance to connect with nature, each other, and the changing seasons.
An “Out of This World” Experience
Recently, however, Jill experienced nature in a way she never expected.
As reported by the BBC News, Jill, 54, from the Chantry area of Ipswich, was left in “awe” after being woken in the early hours by the sound of howling wolves.
At around 2am, unable to sleep, she stepped into her garden.
“I originally thought it was a dog,” Jill explained. “Then as the sounds continued, I realised it was wolves. Since then, I have heard them again.”
The howls came in unison, haunting, powerful and unmistakable. The source was believed to be the 12 Arctic wolves at Jimmy’s Farm & Wildlife Park, founded by TV presenter Jimmy Doherty, located just a couple of miles from her home.
“I literally had goosebumps,” Jill said. “The sounds were so amazing. It was out of this world, just incredible.”
The experience was echoed across the local community, with others confirming they too had heard the wolves that night. Jill described it as feeling like “an amazing dream”, a surreal reminder of the wild world that exists just beyond everyday life.
Bringing the Wild Closer to Home
For residents at Avocet Court, Jill’s story has added another layer to their shared appreciation of nature. While the woodland garden offers calm and familiarity: birds, deer, bees and blossoms – the distant howl of wolves serves as a powerful reminder of the broader natural world.
It’s that connection to nature, whether through building bird boxes, planting for pollinators, or listening to the voices of the wild, that lies at the heart of Avocet Court’s community spirit.
And thanks to Jill’s passion, residents don’t just observe nature, they help shape and protect it for generations to come.
