At Avocet Court Care Home, creating meaningful experiences for residents is at the heart of everything we do. In June, the team had the privilege of making one resident’s lifelong dream come true through the Athena Care Homes Make A Wish programme.
Wendy, who has been living at Avocet Court since October 2025, had always dreamed of experiencing the excitement and colour of the London Carnival. As a child, she longed to attend the famous celebration, but unfortunately never had the opportunity.
Determined to make her wish a reality, the Avocet Court team set out to bring the carnival experience directly to Wendy and the wider community.
A Carnival to Remember
On 13th June, Avocet Court was transformed into a vibrant carnival wonderland. The home and gardens were decorated with bright tropical colours, creating a festive atmosphere that welcomed residents, families, staff and visitors alike.
The day was packed with entertainment and activities, including:
• Spectacular performances from circus entertainers
• Visits from popular Disney characters
• A lively disco
• Face painting for children and adults
• Balloon animal making
• Traditional garden games
• Delicious refreshments, including burgers and hotdogs
The celebration captured the spirit, joy and energy of a carnival, ensuring Wendy could experience the occasion she had dreamed about for so many years.
Bringing the Community Together
The special event welcomed members of the local community, Avocet Court’s sponsored football team and their families, residents and their loved ones, as well as staff and their children.
Adding to the carnival atmosphere, members of the Avocet Court team embraced the theme by dressing in bright tropical outfits and joining in the fun throughout the day.
The event not only fulfilled Wendy’s wish but also created a memorable day for everyone who attended, strengthening community connections and bringing generations together.
Making Wishes Come True at Athena Care Homes
The Athena Care Homes Make A Wish programme is designed to enrich the lives of residents by helping them achieve personal goals, revisit cherished memories or fulfil lifelong dreams.
For Wendy, the carnival celebration was far more than a day of entertainment. It was the realisation of a childhood wish that had remained with her throughout her life.
Seeing Wendy’s delight and sharing such a special occasion with residents, families and the community made the event truly unforgettable for everyone involved.
