Residents and team members at Goodwins Hall, in King’s Lynn, are gearing up for a remarkable journey to mark the Paris Olympics.
The ambitious plan involves collectively cycling almost 400 miles on an exercise bike, symbolising the distance from the care home to Paris, all while raising funds for their local hospice, The Norfolk Hospice – Tapping House.
The event is scheduled to coincide with the Paris Olympics, running from August 1 to 11. During this period, Goodwins Hall will be buzzing with Olympic spirit through a variety of themed activities, including virtual armchair travel to France, sampling French cuisine, and participating in the Athena Care Homes Olympics. This internal competition will see residents and the team from Goodwins Hall join their peers from Athena Care Homes family of homes in East Anglia in a series of fun and engaging events.
Flavia Hansell, the Home Manager at Goodwins Hall, will kickstart the cycle ride on Wednesday. She shared her enthusiasm, saying, “At Goodwins, we feel very much part of the local community, and our residents and team are very excited about the cycle ride and the Olympics. I’m hoping as many people as possible will do a stint on the bike, even is just for a short distance.
“We chose to raise money for Tapping House as a fellow provider of care in the King’s Lynn area and an organisation that is always there for everyone – including us here at Goodwins Hall if we need them for help, advice or training in end of life and palliative care.”
The Norfolk Hospice – Tapping House is a crucial support system for the local community, offering comprehensive care and advice to patients over the age of 18, their carers, and families throughout their illness journey. The hospice’s services extend beyond cancer care to include support for individuals with Parkinson’s, Motor Neurone Disease (MND), heart failure, kidney failure, and Huntington’s disease. Each year, Tapping House supports approximately 1,100 families in West Norfolk, providing invaluable assistance and fostering connections with other local support providers to ensure the best possible care.
Goodwins Hall has a strong partnership with Tapping House, benefiting from their expert advice and training to deliver exemplary palliative and end-of-life care. This collaborative relationship underscores the care home’s commitment to its residents and the broader community.
As the Olympics unfold in Paris, the Goodwins Hall community will be channelling the same spirit of unity and perseverance into their cycle ride, all while making a meaningful contribution to a vital local cause. The initiative not only promotes physical activity and Olympic excitement but also underscores the profound impact of community support.
