Lifestyles Co-ordinator Kanina O’Neil is celebrating today after completing the world-famous London Marathon in an incredible three hours, 13 minutes!
Practicing what she preaches, Kanina, who works with residents at Aria Court Care Home in Fenland, started running four years ago to support her physical and mental wellbeing.
She joined March Athletics Club and discovered a hidden talent for running.
“Having three children and a busy job, it can be a little stressful at times but running gives me that escape from the strains of everyday life. I love getting out and doing something that is just for me.”
Kanina ran in the Cambridge Half Marathon, completing in an hour and 25 minutes – earning her a Championship place in the London Marathon.
“I didn’t actually plan to do a marathon but when I qualified I realised it was an incredible opportunity and one I couldn’t turn down. I might not have ever got another chance to compete.”
Kanina ran 45 miles a week during her training, squeezing in runs early in the day before starting work and late at night once her children were in bed, proving her dedication and passion to the sport.
Despite her impressive time, Kanina hopes to enter again next year and improve on her debut success.
“I was suffering from cramps towards the end and it really slowed me down, my time went off a cliff at that stage. I definitely want to try again and finish faster.”
Kanina’s partner secured a place in the legendary street race through the ballot, and their three children lined the route cheering their parents on, making it a true family affair.
“They are really proud of us both,” said Kanina.
Congratulations Kanina!
