At 92 years young, Peggy Cowell is embracing a new chapter of life during her respite stay at Langdon House in Cambridge—and loving every moment of it. From daily activities and day trips to making new friends and enjoying peace of mind, Peggy describes her time at the care home as “amazing” and a “huge help” following a recent hospital stay.
We had the pleasure of catching up with Peggy on a sunny day trip to The Hut in Felixstowe, an outing shared with residents from sister home Alex Wood House in Arbury. Sitting by the sea with a warm smile and a sparkle in her eye, Peggy shared how the idea of a respite stay was something her doctors and family encouraged after her time in hospital.
“We all talked it over together,” she explained. “Langdon House was the obvious choice. I used to work here years ago—it’s a wonderful home, so welcoming.”
Originally from Union Lane, just along from the care home, Peggy has deep roots in the community. She lived there with her late husband, Albert—whom she fondly remembers as a kind-hearted painter and decorator—for more than 50 years. In her working life, Peggy served as a civil servant, supporting local Cambridgeshire farmers as a seed analyst, and she also lent a hand at Langdon House in its earlier years, helping with cleaning and housekeeping duties.
Now back at Langdon House, but as a resident this time, Peggy says the change of pace and support has been just what she needed.
“It’s been so good not to have the responsibilities of looking after my own home,” she said. “I can focus on getting well—and having a good time at the same time! It also gives my family peace of mind knowing I’m being so well looked after.”
With two children and two grandchildren, Peggy’s family is at the heart of her life, and knowing she is safe and thriving brings them comfort.
She’s also quick to praise the care home team and her fellow residents. “Everyone is so friendly—the team and the other residents. I’m making a lot of friends. The food is great—I’ve no complaints at all!”
Always someone who loved the outdoors, Peggy says the activities programme at Langdon House keeps her energised and happy. “There’s something different every day. I’ve really enjoyed the variety,” she shared, glancing out at the sunshine in Felixstowe—the seaside and the outdoors are a place both she and Albert always loved.
From cherished memories to new experiences, Peggy’s story is a reminder of how respite care, in the right setting, can offer far more than recovery—it can bring renewal, companionship, and joy.
