On Thursday 4 December, residents and team members at Avocet Court gathered in reception for what they believed was a routine announcement, what could it be! Was someone getting married or had someone won the lottery – no – instead, they were met with something far more magical. Avocet Court had been selected by Amanda Holden at Heart Radio as a winner of the “Make Someone’s Christmas Special” competition, recognising the incredible dedication of the home’s team.
The Nomination
The nomination came from Ruth Garnham , Home Manager and Nina Morris, Clinical Deputy Manager, who submitted a heartfelt entry celebrating the team’s unwavering commitment throughout the year, but especially at Christmastime. They highlighted the countless ways staff go above and beyond to create joy for residents, from everyday moments of care to extraordinary gestures like “Once Upon an Avocet,” where the team arranged a horse-and-carriage visit and dressed up as Disney princesses to make a resident’s wish come true.
But it is Christmastime at Avocet Court that truly transforms the home into something magical.
Ruth and Nina wrote “Many workplaces decorate their offices for the holidays, but what happens at Avocet Court is nothing short of magical. Every year, the staff come together to transform the care home into a winter wonderland that sparkles with festive cheer. Christmas trees, twinkling light trails, themed decorations, and displays thoughtfully arranged to delight the residents, every detail is crafted with love and intention. It isn’t done out of obligation; it is done out of genuine joy and a desire to make the season special for those who call Avocet Court home”
One of the most cherished traditions is the Christmas light trail. Staff spend hours planning and decorating, creating a festive walk-through that never fails to delight. Residents wander through with wide-eyed joy, and staff look on with just as much warmth. These shared moments ease loneliness, raise spirits, and create a sense of togetherness that lasts all season long.
They also added “What makes this even more extraordinary is that these efforts come during a time of year that can be especially busy and emotionally demanding for care staff. While many people in other professions wind down for the holidays, the team at Avocet Court continues to work tirelessly, supporting residents, keeping traditions alive, and ensuring that no one feels forgotten or alone. They spend Christmas Day not with their own families, but with the residents who depend on them. They bring festive cheer even when they are tired. They create laughter even on the hardest days. They give their best, always.”
To honour this commitment, Ruth and Nina were interviewed by Jamie Theakston and Heart Radio surprised the team with a visit from the iconic Coca-Cola Christmas truck and a group of carol singers. Staff and residents gathered outside to enjoy the spectacle as the Coca-Cola team handed out gifts and festive cheer filled the air.
The Spirit of Athena
This heartwarming recognition reflects not only the spirit of Avocet Court, but the dedication found throughout Athena Care Homes. Across every home, teams work tirelessly to create magical moments and ensure that every resident feels seen, valued, and loved. This special treat from Heart Radio was not only a celebration, it was richly deserved.
