Out-of-home respite care usually involves a short-term stay in a residential nursing home. This temporary move offers a break to primary caregivers, knowing their loved one is being left in safe hands.
Those undergoing respite care away from home often receive access to the same facilities as permanent nursing home residents.
At Athena Care Homes, we’re pleased to be a respected, respite care home, offering a warm, enjoyable, welcoming environment. We know just how important it is that carers take the time to recharge their batteries now and again. That’s why we offer short-term respite care, providing support to both you and your loved one when you need it most.
What is Respite Care in a Nursing Home?
A respite care home offers a short-term break for primary caregivers. This period of time allows you to recenter, recuperate and focus on prioritising yourself. The amount of time your loved one receives respite care is entirely up to you, from a single afternoon to multiple days or weeks.
There are many different types of respite care available, from residential programs to in-home care. Out-of-home respite care offers 24-hour relief to those looking after a loved one.
Perhaps you’re starting to plan a holiday, or are struggling to balance caring for your family member whilst juggling personal issues. Respite care in a nursing home offers many benefits to both you and your loved one.
As a trusted respite care home, our staff work hard to welcome short-term residents into our home. With a brilliant social atmosphere and a full schedule of activities to partake in, you can rest assured that your loved one will enjoy their time with us.
Respite care away from home is also a great way to introduce you and your family member to one of our homes, particularly if they are considering becoming a permanent resident.
How Does Respite Care Away From Home Work?
A respite care home will provide your loved one the physical support they need on a day-to-day basis. They will also facilitate opportunities to socialise with others.
This temporary care option is a popular choice for individuals with Dementia, due to the intense cognitive support respite care can provide.
Out of home respite care is a flexible solution, able to fit around your lifestyle and the unique needs of your family member.
At Athena Care Homes, our knowledgeable, experienced team will acquire the role of primary carer. This means we’ll take care of everything you would normally do. This includes assisting with personal care, meal preparation, companionship and so much more. If you’d like to find out more about our services, please do get in touch.
Who Arranges Out of Home Respite Care?
Want to take the next step in arranging out of home respite care for your loved one but don’t know where to begin? If you’re looking to organise respite care on behalf of a family member, start by contacting local, reputable care homes. Take the time to question the respite services they offer, and see what availability they currently have.
Should you require financial contribution from your local authority, you should firstly contact them and arrange a Needs Assessment. The aim of this meeting will be to determine the care needs of your loved one and how much support they will need.
Once this assessment has been carried out, the council will look at the individual’s savings and income to determine whether they require financial aid.
Because respite care homes offer temporary assistance, your loved ones property will not be considered as a contributing factor.
Who Pays For Respite Care in a Nursing Home?
Local councils will only fund out of home respite care for people who have undergone a formal evaluation.
Even if your loved one doesn’t require council funding, it could still be useful for them to undergo a Needs Assessment. This allows you to gain a better understanding of the type of respite care they may find most useful, and how you can go about seeking it.
If, after conducting extensive research, you choose a respite care home that requires higher fees than the amount offered by the council, you may be able to contribute a ‘top-up fee’. This allows you to cover any additional costs related to your loved one’s care, should you be in the position to do so.
If you’d like to find out more about the potential costs related to receiving respite care in one of our homes, please do get in touch.
