Athena Care Homes is delighted to welcome Daniel Baker as the new Learning and Development Manager. With a wealth of experience, passion, and knowledge, Daniel is dedicated to shaping the future of care through training and development.
Daniel’s journey in the care sector began at just 14 when he took his first job in a local care home, serving tea to residents for two hours after school.
However, he often stayed longer, captivated by the stories and warmth of the people he cared for. It was here that he learned to knit, mastered various card games, and even perfected the art of setting curlers—all while bringing joy to those around him.
At 16, Daniel became a carer in a Braintree care home, a role that opened numerous doors for him. He later pursued a cadetship in nursing at Broomfield Hospital, gaining experience across multiple disciplines, including surgical, medical, emergency and intensive care, urology, and breast cancer care. It was during this time that he developed a keen interest in mentoring and teaching others, guiding students and new staff members to build their clinical skills and confidence.
In 2009, Daniel formalised his passion for training by earning a teaching qualification and becoming an internal quality assurer. He later established his own business as a training provider, working with care homes, care groups, and community-based professionals supporting individuals with spinal and brain injuries, physical disabilities, and other care needs.
Daniel’s personal connection to care extends beyond his professional life. He has provided palliative care for his nan and both his mother and father-in-law, and an aunt, who lives with Parkinson’s disease. With both his mother and grandmother having been nurses, Daniel believes that his calling to care is deeply ingrained in his nature.
“For me, working in health and care is not just a job—it’s who I am and I am happiest when I am caring for others,” says Daniel. “Being able to train and teach others to provide the best care is a privilege. I’m passionate about helping people deliver the right care, ensuring the highest standards for those who need it most.”
Outside of work, Daniel enjoys spending time with his partner and their beloved pets, including two spaniels, an aviary full of birds, a parrot, and a tortoise. A self-confessed adrenaline junkie, he’s a frequent visitor to theme parks like Thorpe Park and Alton Towers.
Daniel is also an avid theatre enthusiast, both as a spectator and performer. A semi-professional singer and actor, he has taken on roles such as the Genie in Aladdin, Uncle Fester in The Addams Family, and most recently, Loco Chanelle in Everybody’s Talking About Jamie. “It’s a bit of escapism,” he admits with a smile, “but it’s also helped build my confidence and skills as a trainer.”
With his extensive experience and deep commitment to care, Daniel is set to make a lasting impact at Athena Care Homes, ensuring that all team members are well-equipped to provide exceptional support to residents.
