At Alex Wood House Care Home, part of Athena Care Homes, we believe that making moments together and being there for one another extends far beyond our home. It reaches into the heart of our local community, and our fundraising event in 2025, for the Cambridge Acorn Project is a wonderful example of this in action.
The Cambridge Acorn Project has spent over a decade supporting children and families across Cambridge who are affected by trauma, abuse and financial hardship. Their work has positively changed the lives of thousands of local families, providing vital support when it is needed most.
As a valued local partner, Alex Wood House was proud to take part in The Big Give, a community fundraising initiative designed to amplify donations and make an even greater impact.
Bingo, Community Spirit and Kindness
Our Lifestyle Lead, Nikki, was approached by the Acorn Project’s fundraising manager to see if Alex Wood House could help raise funds. With enthusiasm and community spirit, the team quickly came together with an idea that would bring people together, a Bingo afternoon.
The event was held at the Church of the Good Shepherd, who kindly donated the use of their space. Guests were invited to enjoy three games of bingo for £5, alongside a raffle costing £1 per strip of five tickets.
Local businesses generously donated prizes, including:
• The Cambridge Juice Company
• Dorrington’s Bakery
• Budgens
• Pizza Pilgrims Cambridge
Their kindness helped turn the afternoon into a joyful and successful community event.
A Big Impact from a Small Community
Thanks to the generosity of everyone who attended, Alex Wood House raised £188.95 on the day. Through The Big Give initiative, this amount was doubled, bringing the total contribution to an incredible £377.90.
The Cambridge Acorn Project later shared their heartfelt thanks, explaining that alongside 79 other supporters, a staggering £35,133 was raised in just seven days.
Kate Weir from the Acorn Project shared:
“The best thing is this funding is unrestricted, so it helps cover essential core costs and keeps our charity running – the work we do wouldn’t be possible without support like yours.”
Looking Ahead
At Alex Wood House, we love bringing people together for a good cause. Fundraising is not just about money, it’s about connection, kindness and shared moments.
We’re already looking ahead to our next event in 2026, with Beat the January Blues Bingo planned to raise funds for the Veterans Club.
Thank you to everyone who supported this event, donated prizes, attended, or helped behind the scenes. Together, we truly make a difference.
